UK, Japan agree new quantum, connectivity research projects

The UK and Japanese governments are strengthening science and technology research partnerships with new quantum and advanced connectivity projects. The investments were agreed during the recent visit of Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer to Japan. They have also agreed to hold the Japan-UK Joint Committee on Cooperation in Science & Technology for the first time in three years, and to launch a new space consultation.

Italian operator Tiscali has launched a series of promotions covering its Casa-branded FTTH, FTTC and FWA offers, discounting monthly costs for new users. They start at EUR 19.90 a month for the first 12 months (EUR 25.90 thereafter) for Tiscali Casa Fibra Power and Casa Ultrainternet with pay-as-you-go calls and internet access at speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps on the network of wholesale partner Open Fiber.

Reconome, UK-based circular IT solutions provider, has announced partnerships with the Good Things Foundation and Cellnex to tackle digital exclusion and e-waste. It will work with Good Things Foundation to deliver 85,000 devices to digitally excluded Brits by June 2029 through the National Device Bank. The expanded partnership sees Reconome become the exclusive technology partner for the National Device Bank, ensuring a long-term, sustainable supply of devices.

Chilean operator Wom has announced the installation of a telecommunications antenna in Punta Dungeness, a headland at the eastern entrance of the Strait of Magellan, as part of its national 5G rollout. The new site is part of the operator's project to expand service coverage through the connection of 366 previously unserved or underserved localities across the country.

Voys announced the takeover of Verbonden to expand its offering of VoIP services in the Netherlands. The share transfer took effect at the start of 2026, after the companies already worked together for several years. Sky announces return of Sky One channel for UK customers

Sky has announced the return of the Sky One TV channel in the UK, launching on channel 106 from 24 February. Sky One will be the home of comedy and entertainment programmes, replacing Sky Max and Sky Showcase. Fubo announces reseller and marketing deal with ESPN, reports 40% rise in Q1 revenue

Fubo has announced plans for a reseller and marketing arrangement with ESPN as it published results showing a 4 percent rise in reported revenue in the first quarter ended 31 December 2025. Fubo Sports, which already includes ESPN Unlimited as well as Fox and CBS programming, will become available for purchase in ESPN's commerce flow. In addition, ESPN will feature Fubo in various placements on ESPN digital properties. This arrangement is subject to the negotiation of definitive agreements.

Broadcom has unveiled its first complete silicon platform targeting manufacturers of enterprise-grade Wi-Fi 8 access points. The US vendor is also launching a new hardware platform for Ethernet switches, the Trident X3+ BCM56390, incorporating its power sourcing equipment (PSE) silicon for power-over-Ethernet functionality, and a physical layer chip for multi-gigabit data transport. Comcast has announced an advertising campaign by its Xfinity brand at the 2026 Super Bowl American football match, which takes place on 08 February. O2 Czech Republic refreshes Neo+ tariff line

O2 Czech Republic has refreshed its tariff line Neo+, increasing the data bundles and speeds. Customers are also offered coupons for up to CZK 7,000 off new devices. Under the Neo+ Blue and Neo+ Bronze tariffs, the operator is increasing the data volume by 2 GB, so customers will now receive 6 GB and 14 GB of data respectively. Under the Neo+ Silver tariff, the speed increases from 10 Mbps to 15 Mbps, and Neo+Gold rises from 20 Mbps to 40 Mbps.

Vodacom Tanzania revenue rises 20% in Q3

Vodacom Tanzania said its revenue increased by 19.8 percent year-on-year to TZS 484.0 billion in the fiscal third quarter ended December 2025. Net profit fell 33.4 percent to TZS 35.5 billion, weighed down by extra costs for a major network upgrade project and forex losses, while EBITDA rose 24.7 percent to TZS 185.0 billion, and the EBITDA margin reached 38.2 percent, up from 36.7 percent. Capital expenditure jumped 178.8 percent to TZS 79.7 billion.

Spain intends to ban children under 16 from using social media platforms, the country's prime minister Pedro Sánchez announced at an event in Dubai, joining a growing number of countries tightening online age restrictions. European Payments Initiative plans cross-border interoperability hub in H1

The European Payments Initiative (EPI) said that Vipps MobilePay (Norway and Denmark), Bancomat (Italy), Bizum (Spain) and SIBS (Portugal) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate the roll-out of sovereign, pan-European payment services. Nkom and Norwegian Competition Authority to look into Telia-Ice RAN joint venture

Norwegian telecoms regulator Nkom said it has asked Telia and Ice for more information about their plans to combine their Radio Access Networks in a joint venture. Director John-Eivend Velure said facilitating three competing networks has been central to its regulatory work and it will be taking a look at the two operators' frequency permits. The Competition Authority (Konkurransetilsynet) will have a central role in assessing the venture, Nkom added.
